The placenta is an amazing organ that you grow uniquely for your baby during pregnancy, containing essential nutrients, hormones, and immune factors. After childbirth, women experience a sudden loss of hormones and depletion of nutrients, which can have adverse physical and psychological effects for many women.

Placenta Encapsulation helps to facilitate postpartum healing. The placenta can help replenish your iron and energy lost during childbirth. It’s also rich in protein and essential vitamins like B6. Mothers who ingest their placenta report less incidences of postpartum depression, and research shows that the natural hormones found in the placenta can help with milk production. Your placenta nourished your baby and now you have the opportunity to utilize it to nourish you both postpartum.

Traditional Method

This method involves Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice, which is over 5,000 years old. In TCM theory, the process of labor and birth leaves a lot of open, empty space, which is considered Yin, or cold. One way to promote healing during the postpartum period is to add Yang energy via heat. Incorporating the steam and warming herbs produces a balancing effect in the body and a nourishing medicine for the postpartum period.

The process begins with an overall health check and cleaning of the placenta. Once cleaned, it is steamed on top of (optional) warming herbs of organic lemon and ginger (added only to the water). The placenta is then dehydrated for 16-24 hours, ground into a fine powder and placed into capsules for consumption. A placenta yields between 100-150 capsules and is enjoyable for up to two years if stored properly.

Raw Method

This method is NOT recommended if the mother had a suspected infection or any trauma during birth or has a history of anxiety, insomnia, or hyperthyroidism. This method is a good option for those who have had a homebirth, already follow a raw foods diet, or for those who are interested in the freshest hormonal benefits of placenta encapsulation.

The process begins with a health check of the placenta and a gentle rinse of blood clots. The placenta is sliced into small pieces and placed in a dehydrator for about 24 hours. Raw is processed with as little interference as possible to keep all of the nutrients and hormones in for you to ingest. Once completely dry, the pieces are ground up into powder and packed into capsules. Raw method is said to provide a quick burst of energy and hormone balance and yields more capsules.
